Sailors Friend explores a brand new approach to characterizing the effects of motion and related sea sickness.
Sailors Friend provides motion feedback in the form of sound, to assist in comprehending changes in motion.
Motion sickness is not very well understood, but for some it could potentially relate to the inability of the inner ear and subsequently the brain, to predict or quantify motion. When moving, some people feel better with visual feedback of the horizon, sea state or distant points. When visual feedback is not available, the effects of motion sickness can potentially worsen.
Wrist bands, ginger, and formulated pills are all used to attempt to alleviate motion nausea symptoms, but these approaches have varying success for varying people.
Sailors Friend is an app designed to provide additional feedback via an audio signal when in motion using the internal motion sensors of the iPhone. Audio feedback is relayed in proportion to the amount of certain types of motion.
This experimental app is only intended to provide audio feedback relating to certain types of motion. It has not been proven to reduce the effects of motion sickness and should not be relied upon to alleviate any effects or symptoms relating to motion sickness.
If you do choose to try it, we would very much like to hear of your impressions or suggestions for this experimental app.
Using Sailors Friend is simple: Set the iPhone on a flat surface and press Start...
Connecting your iPhone to your favorite BlueTooth Audio Speaker, in the usual manner, will improve your experience.
